SAMPLES Just Posted: Pentax 645D sample images

Just Posted: Comparison samples from the Pentax 645D. We've had Pentax's long-awaited 40 megapixel medium format DSLR in the office for a couple of days and have used it to shoot our standard test scene. The $10,000 camera is the highest resolution camera ever to be pointed at our test subjects and its huge 44x33mm sensor has certainly done an impressive job. As well as providing a range of image settings for the studio scene, we've also prepared a small gallery of sample images. All the images and their raw files (DNG format for the 'real-world' samples) are available for download. (00:18 GMT)

UPDATE Nikon preparing firmware for D7000

Nikon has announced it is working on a firmware upgrade in response to concerns raised about video from the D7000. The statement confirms the occasional occurrence of bright spots while recording videos as reported by some owners. The firmware will aim to reduce this occurrence. The company says these spots may be noticeable especially when recording movies of dark scenes or subjects and 'do not indicate a problem with practical use'. (18:18 GMT)

LENS NEWS Samyang ships 14mm f/2.8 ED AS IF UMC for Samsung NX

Samyang Optics has announced its 14mm f/2.8 ED AS IF UMC manual focus lens is now available in the Samsung NX mount at a retail price €329. Previously available in Nikon F mount, the lens' electronic contacts allow full support of automatic exposure modes of Samsung NX cameras and ensure the inclusion of lens-related data in the EXIF metadata. UPDATE Sony updates firmware for DSLR-A900 and DSLR-A850

Sony has announced function enhancing firmware updates for its DSLR-A900 and DSLR-A850 full-frame cameras. The latest versions for both cameras promise faster AF and broaden both exposure compensation range (to -/+5 from the current -/+3) and the exposure bracketing range (from up to -/+2EV to a maximum of -/+3EV). It also adds a new menu option allowing shutter release without an attached lens. (07:00 GMT)

UPDATE onOne Software starts shipping Perfect Photo Suite 5.5

Plug-in maker onOne Software has announced its Perfect Photo Suite v5.5 bundle is now available. The latest version of the suite includes seven of the company's image-editing plug-ins and offers better compatiblity with Lightroom and Aperture. SOFTWARE NEWS Topaz Labs releases InFocus blur reduction plug-in

Topaz Labs has released the Infocus sharpening and blur reduction plug-in for Adobe Photoshop. The software uses advanced deconvolution technology aiming to reverse the effect of blur in images. REVIEW Just Posted: Nikon D7000 in-depth review

Just Posted: Our review of Nikon's D7000 mid-range DSLR. Nikon surprised many people by pushing its enthusiast DSLR distinctly up-market just as Canon was doing the opposite with its 60D. The result is such a highly specified camera that it's generated almost as much interest from existing and would-be D300S customers as from the traditional D90 audience. SOFTWARE NEWS Phase One announces Capture One 6

Phase One has released version 6 of its Capture One raw processing and editing software. Capture One 6 gains the ability to make local changes to images without affecting the underlying raw file, amongst other additions. Based around what the company calls 'the world's most advanced image processing engine,' it also adds keystone distortion correction that attempts to reduce perspective effects (e.g. converging verticals), without overly distorting the dimensions of the objects in the scene. These come in addition Capture One's standard organizing, browsing and conversion tools. (18:00 GMT)

CAMERA NEWS Canon offers locking mode dial for EOS 5D Mark II and 7D

Canon has issued a service notice for the EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 7D offering a paid-for option to replace the cameras' mode dial with a redesiged lockable version. Similar to the one seen the company's latest EOS 60D DSLR, the mode dial features a centre button which has to be pressed to allow a change of exposure mode. This option will be available from December 6 and for a cost of $110 in the US. The European service charge is to be confirmed. (18:22 GMT)

UPDATE DxO Labs releases DxO Optics Pro v6.5.1 for Win & Mac

DxO Labs has updated its DxO Optics Pro raw converter for Windows and Mac. Version 6.5.1 extends Raw support to Nikon D7000 and Sony Alpha DSLR-A390 in the both Standard and Elite editions. It also includes 120 additional camera/lens optical modules. Recent purchasers get the upgrade for free or there is a 30% discount available until Christmas Day. (18:15 GMT)

ACCESSORY NEWS Nikon, SanDisk and Sony propose larger, faster memory format

Nikon, SanDisk and Sony have jointly developed the specifications for a faster type of memory card. The specifications have been submitted to the Compact Flash Association with the aim of them being adopted as a future standard. The proposal uses the PCI Express interface to offer transfer rates of up to 500MB/s, rather than the 167MB/s limit of the most recent Compact Flash 6.0 standard. The proposal hope to provide a card that can cope with future requirements for bursts of RAW images and large quantities of HD footage. The Compact Flash Association has established a working group that will evaluate the proposal by the end of 2010. (20:04 GMT)

MISC NEWS Peter iNova releases Photoshop actions e-book

Author Peter iNova has released 'Actions! Photoshop CS5,' a pdf e-book optimized for Apple's iPad or computer viewing. It includes over 700 actions for Photoshop CS5 for still images and HD videos. The e-book itself runs to 264 pages that include high resolution images along with interactive hyperlinks and demos. The book is available via GMBooks at a retail price of $25. (23:51 GMT)

UPDATE Panasonic releases FZ100, FX700 and FX75 firmware updates

Panasonic has released firmware updates for its Lumix DMC-FZ100, DMC-FX700 and DMC-FX75/FX70 digital compacts. The latest versions for all cameras improves the Motion Deblur feature in the cameras' Intelligent Auto mode. Version 1.1 for the FX700 and v1.2 for FZ100 also improves AF performance while recording movies. The updates are available for download from Panasonic's website. (19:05 GMT)

REVIEW Canon G12 test images added to group test

Just Posted: Canon PowerShot G12 test samples as part of our Enthusiast Group Test. The G12 didn't arrive in time to be included in the test itself but we've now had a chance to take it into the studio and shoot our standard comparison shots. The images have been added to our comparison tools and have been included in the 'compared to...' and noise test pages (you can, of course, still include competitors such as Samsung's EX1/TL500 if you prefer). CAMERA NEWS Hasselblad announces limited edition stainless steel H4D-40

Hasselblad has announced a 100-unit limited edition of its H4D-40 medium format camera in stainless steel. The company has also said the H4D Ferrari limited edition, announced at Photokina 2010, is now available at retail prices of €21,499 and $29,499. The Ferrari edition comes with the company's 80mm lens, a special case and the Phocus image editing software. It is limited to 499 units. (18:12 GMT)

MISC NEWS Kuwait reported to have banned use of DSLRs in public UPDATED

The Kuwait government has banned the use of DSLRs cameras in public, according to a local media reports. The English-language Kuwait Times says the country’s Ministry of Information, Ministry of Social Affairs and Ministry of Finance have ruled photography with DSLRs should be used only by accredited journalists. There is currently no official confirmation of the decision, why it has been introduced or detail about how precise a definition of the term 'DSLR' will be applied. The Kuwait Times has subsequently retracted its story as being incorrect and said there was no such ban. (18:51 GMT)

MISC NEWS app4cam updates gps4cam geotagging iPhone app

app4cam has released an updated version of its 'gps4cam' iPhone app that allows users to geotag images from any digital cameras even when their phone doesn't have a signal. The app logs the location details as users travel around, then creates a QR-Code that allows this data to be easily synchronized with photos using the associated 'gps4cam Desktop' PC or Mac software. The gps4cam app can be downloaded from Apple’s App Store for $1.99. (23:03 GMT)

ACCESSORY NEWS Nikon to ship SB-700 flashgun from November 26

Nikon Japan has announced its Speedlight SB-700 flashgun will be available from November 26 at a retail price of ¥44,100. In the US market, it will be available from mid-December at an estimated retail price of $329.95. Announced at Photokina 2010 and a replacement for the company's SB-600 flashgun, it offers a guide number of 28, wireless flash control and multi-step zoom from 24 to 120mm. It also includes a rotating head, built-in bounce card, a supplied diffuser and both incandescent and fluorescent filters. (19:27 GMT)

CAMCORDER NEWS Sony updates NEX-VG10E to autofocus with Alpha lenses

Sony has issued a firmware update for its NEX-VG10E camcorder that enables autofocus with Alpha-mount SLR lenses equipped with SSM or SAM motors. Covering 14 lens models, AF compatibility also requires a separate update for the LA-EA1 Mount Adapter. The firmware is available now for free download from Sony's website. (13:03 GMT)

LENS NEWS Sigma releases 70-200mm F2.8 OS for Pentax and Sony

Sigma Japan has announced its 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM image-stabilised fast telezoom is now available in Pentax K-mount and will be available in Sony Alpha mount from the end of this month. In the US market, they will be available from mid-December and January respectively at a retail price of $2,470. The company has also announced its EF-610 DG ST flashgun will be available for Canon cameras from December at a recommended retail price of $400. (17:06 GMT)

UPDATE Panasonic posts firmware update for Lumix DMC-G2

Panasonic has posted a firmware update for its Lumix DMC-G2 Micro Four Thirds camera. Version 1.1 adds a function allowing the recording and playback of 3D images when used with the company's H-FT012 3D lens. it also allows the use of AE lock with the touch-shutter function. UPDATE Pentax updates K-5 firmware to V1.01

Pentax has issued updated firmware for its K-5 mid-level DSLR. Version 1.01 increases the number of RAW images that can be shot in a burst during continuous shooting at both low and high ISO settings. The latest version allows the camera to capture up to 20 images in a burst, rather than 8. It also claims 'improved stability for general performance.' CAMCORDER NEWS Sony develops professional E-mount camcorder

Sony has announced it is to develop a professional E-mount camcorder. The as-yet-unnamed model will be available from mid-2011 as an addition to the company's NXCAM line-up of broadcast-standard camcorders. It will feature a CMOS sensor equivalent to the Super-35mm film format (which is essentially the same size as the APS-C format seen in existing E-mount cameras). It will record videos in AVCHD format with plans to implement 1080p (60p / 30p / 24p or 50p / 25p) recording in the MPEG4-AVC/H.264 format. This will be the company's second camcorder compatible with E-mount lenses, following the NEX-VG10E consumer-grade model. (19:41 GMT)

CAMERA NEWS Olympus launches enhanced kit lens on Japan-only E-PL1s

Olympus has announced the Japan-only E-PL1s and, more significantly, the M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm II 1:3.5-5.6 kit lens. The camera is a slightly tweaked version of the existing EPL1 but the lens is a completely new design, featuring internal focus for faster, quieter autofocusing. As such the Mark II lens, which is expected to become available worldwide in the near future, gains the company's MSC (Movie and Stills Compatible) designation. It is slightly smaller than the original 14-42 design and, at 112g, is 25% lighter than the existing version. The E-PL1s itself extends the main body color to most of the camera and gains the ability to shoot at ISO 6400. (02:01 GMT)

REVIEW Just Posted: Canon EOS 60D in-depth review

Just Posted: our Canon EOS 60D full review. It's been a busy period here at dpreview but behind the scenes we've been shooting with and testing many of the big Photokina 2010 releases. The 60D is not the direct replacement for the 50D that many Canon users expected but there's still an awful lot of 7D fitting into a smaller, lighter body with an articulated screen that is likely to appeal to video shooters. It has the same 18MP sensor as the 7D and 550D and the large, bright viewfinder from its predecessor. It becomes the first X0D camera to have a plastic, rather than metal, body but it also becomes the first to have an articulated screen - a variant of the excellent 1.04 million dot 3:2 screen from the 550D. So how well do all these elements come together and do they create a 'super Rebel' for entry-level users to aspire to? (21:12 GMT)

PREVIEW Panasonic GF2 announced and previewed

Panasonic has announced the Lumix DMC-GF2 Micro Four Thirds camera. A simplified version of the company's GF1, it inherits the same flat-body design but with revised control layout and touch-screen control. It is built around a 12MP CMOS sensor but with a more powerful processor than its predecessor, allowing AVCHD video recording of 1080i60 movies from 1080p30 capture. It is also compatible with the company's recently released 3D lens. We've had a pre-production GF2 in the office for a few days, so click through to read all about it in our hands-on preview. LENS NEWS Canon delays shipping of latest EOS lenses

Canon Japan has announced a delay in production of three recently announced lenses. The EF 8-15mm F4L USM fisheye zoom and the EF 300mm and 400mm F2.8L IS II lenses that were supposed to hit the shelves next month, will now be available from March 2011. However, the EF 70-300mm F4-5.6L IS USM and the 2x III and 1.4x III Extenders will start shipping as scheduled on November 19 and December 2010 respectively. (11:48 GMT)

CAMERA NEWS Mamiya releases RZ22 medium format camera

Mamiya has announced the RZ22 digital medium format camera system featuring a 22MP 48 x 36 CCD sensor. Similar to the company's previously released RZ33 medium format camera, it features fully integrated electronics for direct communication with the digital back and offers image capture rate of 1.1 seconds per frame. The RZ22 is compatible with all RZ system lenses and most accessories. It is currently available in the US market at a retail price of $11,499. (17:05 GMT)

LENS NEWS Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 in Sony mount now available in the UK

Tokina's UK distributor Kenro has announced the AT-X 116 Pro DX 11-16 mm f/2.8 lens is now available in Sony Alpha mount at a recommended retail price of £740.25. Tokina's first lens for Sony's Alpha mount offers an equivalent focal length of 17-25mm and features a 'One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism' allowing users to switch between AF and MF by pulling the focusing ring towards the camera. Canon, Olympus and Pentax have released software updates. Canon has updated its Digital Photo Pro, EOS Utility, Picture Style Editor, ZoomBrowser and ImageBrowser software fixing bugs, bringing improvements and extending support to recently released cameras including the EOS 60D and PowerShot S95. Olympus' Viewer 2 has been updated to support the E-5 digital SLR. Pentax Digital Camera Utility v4.21 adds an automatic lens correction feature, and extends support to the K-5 and K-r DSLRs amongst other improvements. (11:48 GMT)

Ricoh has announced a function-enhancing firmware update for its GXR interchangeable lens camera. In response to user feedback, the firmware adds a wide range of features including Spot and Macro AF area selection options, faster AF, auto noise reduction, Exif 2.3 support and 3 magnification ratios to check focus. UPDATE Adobe issues Lightroom 3.3 and ACR 6.3 release candidates

Adobe has released 'Release Candidates' of its Camera RAW 6.3 and Lightroom 3.3 raw processing software. The updates, available from the company's Adobe Labs site, bring support for 8 additional cameras including the Nikon D7000, D3100 and P7000. Canon's G12 and S95 enthusiast compacts are also supported, along with Samsung's NX100 and TL350 (WB2000). Panasonic's GH2 completes the octet.
